Consultations

If you are not located in Melbourne, Australia, or driving to appointments makes you feel unwell, a great option can be to have an online telehealth video consultation.

An online video consultation can be a beneficial alternative to face to face appointments. We can offer education, advice, instructions on how to ‘self-treat’, as well as exercise sessions and home exercise programs, to keep you on track.

Below, we’ve answered our patients’ frequently asked questions to help provide more information about how telehealth video consultations work.

  1. Can my treating therapist conduct a proper assessment during a telehealth video consult?

Yes. Our staff assess your presenting concern via two main types of assessment. One involves asking you questions to help diagnose the cause of your symptoms. The other is a physical examination which may involve watching how you perform certain movements or tasks. Both of these techniques can be done via telehealth – much of the information we gain from asking you questions gives us a very good understanding of what is contributing to your issue. From there, we can formulate your diagnosis and treatment plan.

  1. Can my physiotherapist provide proper treatment online?

Much of what physiotherapists provide in the way of treatment is advice, education and targeted rehabilitation exercises. This converts very well to an online setting.

Hands-on or manual treatment with your physio is obviously not available, however there are many ways your physio can teach you to self-treat to help provide symptom relief.

Some clients with specific neck issues do benefit from a small number of sessions of ‘hands on’ manual treatment. In these instances, your concussion physiotherapist will advise you to see a local physio for face to face ‘hands on’ treatment. Your concussion physio will work together with your local physio and give you exercise progressions to improve your concussion symptoms. It is recommended to see your concussion physio via telehealth whilst you are also seeing your local ‘hands on’ physio.

  1. How can I learn the exercises provided by my physio?

During the final stages of your online telehealth consult, your physiotherapist can record a video demonstration of your individualised exercise program. This short video is then uploaded to the secure video platform Vimeo and you are emailed a link to this video within 24 hours of your appointment. Only you and your physiotherapist can view the video and it is available for you to watch online whenever you want until your next appointment or your discharge from your physiotherapist.

  1. Is it easy for me to login online for my video telehealth appointment?

Yes. Once we book your appointment, you will receive an email that contains an access link. At the time of your appointment, simply click the link and it will take you directly to your telehealth video consultation. It’s super easy to use! You just need a reliable internet connection for the duration of your appointment.

  1. Do my online consultations qualify for a Medicare or private health insurance rebate?

Telehealth consultations with your Medical Doctor do qualify for a Medicare rebate, as long as you live more than 15km from the medical clinic or it is unreasonable (too difficult) for you to be able to attend an appointment in person.

Some private health insurance companies now provide rebates for telehealth services with a physiotherapist. It is recommended that you contact your individual private health insurance provider and ask if you are eligible to claim rebates for physiotherapy telehealth appointments.
